Things to do in Caithness

Caithness is the region that covers the far northeast of the Scottish mainland. It takes in the iconic John O'Groats and Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of the British mainland. It also forms part of the popular NC500 driving route and is the departure point for ferries to Orkney, yet is often overlooked as a destination in its own right.

It boasts more brochs than any other region in Scotland, with Nybster Broch and South Yarrows Broch being two of my favourites in the area. The Yarrows Broch can be found on the excellent Yarrows Archaeological Trail, one of my top recommended walks for lovers of ancient history. Other rewarding walks include the Latheronwheel Fairy Glen, an easy option for all ages with some magic thrown in, and a hike along to the photogenic sea stacks at Duncansby.

Other historic sites of interest in the region include the Grey Cairns of Camster, Achavanich Standing Stones and Hill O'Many Stanes. Castle hunters will be kept busy along the coast with the impressive ruins of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe, the precarious Keiss Castle and the remains of Castle of Old Wick, one of Scotland's oldest castles.

The main towns in Caithness are Thurso and Wick, both fishing ports with interesting histories and numerous amenities including Wolfburn and Pulteney whisky distilleries. The coast is also punctuated with picturesque harbours including Lybster, Dunbeath, Latheronwheel and Staxigoe. Some of my other recommended stops in the region are the Whaligoe Steps, Badebea Clearance Village, Dunnet Bay Beach and Castle of Mey, a former royal residence of The Queen Mother.
