Things to do in Angus

Angus is a region on the east coast of Scotland, just north of Dundee and just south of Aberdeenshire.  From historical houses and castles to quaint fishing villages, sweeping beaches and scenic glens - there is something for everyone.

History lovers should head to Arbroath Abbey where the Declaration of Arbroath was written, or visit the dramatic looking Glamis Castle, setting for Shakespeare’s Macbeth and childhood home of the Queen Mother.  The House of Dun, Hospitalfield House and Edzell Castle are just some of the other historic attractions of note in the area.

The Pictish Trail is also worth following if you are interested in that period and you have to try an Arbroath Smokie if you visit Arbroath.  The locally smoked haddock is a famous delicacy, best bought hot and fresh from the smoking barrel.

If walking or hiking features in your plans, I recommend exploring the beautiful Angus Glens which easily compete as some of the most scenic locations in Scotland.  The Angus coastline has some great cliff and beach walks, and don't miss Reekie Linn is you like waterfalls as it is one of the most stunning in Scotland.

Did you know J M Barrie, the author of Peter Pan was born in Angus?  You can visit his birthplace in Kirriemuir and take a tour of the house he lived in with his seven brother and sisters!  While you're in Kirriemuir look out for the statue of Bon Scott who was also born there and went on to become the lead singer of AC/DC.

If the sun is shining, head to one of the beautiful local beaches, Lunan Bay and Montrose Beach are two of my personal favourites.  Golfers will be in their element as Angus has some of the best courses in Scotland and some say the world, Carnoustie Championship course is just one of many.

Other outdoor activities available locally include fishing, cycling, farm tours and even an alpaca walking experience.

If you need more inspiration, check out my blog posts with ideas of things to do in the region.
