Things to do in Glasgow

Glasgow is the city I was born in and subsequently spent over 30 years living there.  Even though I live in another part of Scotland now, I return regularly to visit friends and family so still the know the city very well.  I will always class myself as a Glaswegian and throughout my life I have seen the city undergo massive changes from an industrial centre to a world class tourist destination.

Today the city is a cultural hub filled with galleries, museums and tourist attractions.  It is a UNESCO City of Music, with street buskers and music venues of every size dotted around the city centre and beyond - you can even go on a music walking tour to find out more.

Glasgow means 'Dear Green Place' and the city has more than 90 public gardens and parks, which means you are never far away from a slice of nature.  It is also within easy reach of Loch Lomond National Park and the coastal beaches of Ayrshire if you want to spend more time outdoors.

A mural trail filled with amazing street art is a fun way to explore the city and history lovers should head for the 'Medieval Quarter' around Glasgow Cathedral, which is the oldest part of the city.  Take a walk up the hill in the neighbouring Necropolis cemetery for fantastic views.

If you have more time, explore the many buildings designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, arguably the city's most famous architect, go on one of the many themed walking tours or find out more about whisky at the Clydeside Distillery.  There is something for all interests in and around Glasgow so make sure you include it on your Scotland itinerary and here are some of my recommendations if you do visit.
