Things to do in Moray

When I think of Moray Speyside I think of dolphins, Walkers shortbread and of course whisky.  Home to over 50 whisky distilleries including Glenfiddich, Tormore, Tomintoul and Glenlivet the region’s warm and dry climate (in relation to the rest of Scotland at least) makes the land ideal for growing barley.  The Malt Whisky Trail is a three-day trail covering 7 working distilleries and a historic distillery, and is the only trail of its kind in the world.

There is a chance you could also spot the Moray Firth dolphins if you head for the coast, the best spot to see them though is actually a little further up on the Black Isle, at Chanonry Point, although can also sometimes spot them in Burghead where I visited while I was staying in Tullochwood Lodges.  These playful and wild bottlenose dolphins are often seen playing in the rising tide.

The Moray Coastal Trail begins in Findhorn and ends in Cullen, and is a stunning 50 mile coastal walk showing off the region’s beaches, cliffs and wildlife.  Further inland the region’s capital, Elgin, has a wonderful Cathedral, a neoclassical church, St Giles, and ancient cobbled lanes to explore.  There are also some fantastic castles and beaches to explore which is always a good thing.

It’s an area that isn’t often included in itineraries, unless the people compiling them happen to like a dram or two, but I think it deserves to be, and I’ll be spending more time there so be sure to watch out for blogs from the area.

HISTORY IN MORAY
12 fascinating historic sites to visit and explore in Moray
This is a region packed with historical gems. Castles? Yes, but also Pictish stones, Macbeth Country, quirky museum and heritage whisky distilleries. If you love history as much as I do you'll love Moray.
