Things to do in Sutherland

The area of Sutherland covers most of the north Highlands from Kinlochbervie, Durness and Cape Wrath in the north to Dornoch, Golspie and Brora in the south east.  The famous North coast 500 route travels up the west coast taking in the beautiful Lochinver, Alcmelvich beach and Loch Assynt.

The scenery here is the most beautiful I’ve seen, as you head through the Assynt the landscape is jurassic, sparce and simply mesmerising. Make sure you stop off at the North West Highlands Geopark where the rocks by the shore are 3,000 million years old and the impact of the Moine Thrust have resulted in some pretty fascinating rock formations.

The village of Durness is the most northwesterly community in Scotland and is a scattering of crofting cottages in the heart of Clan Mackay land.  The north coast from Cape Wrath to Strathy is wild and is often battered by the gales from the North Sea, making it, at times, quite the adventure!

I’ve spent quite a bit of time on the gentler east coast recently, especially the area around Sutherland’s main town of Dornoch where there is a a spectacular coastline and a beach that would rival those famous beaches in the north west.  The spectacular fairytale-like Dunrobin Castle is nearby too.

This is an area I’m looking forward to exploring more.
