About Adventures Around Scotland

Hello and nice to meet you!  I'm Susanne Arbuckle, the real life person behind Adventures Around Scotland and occasionally the face in front of the camera.  Since 2014 I have been documenting my travels around my home country on this blog and my various social media channels.
There are many websites and articles out there that showcase the same well known Scottish attractions but having first hand experience of how wonderful some of Scotland's lesser known gems are, I was frustrated at their lack of representation online.  I also noticed that many articles providing 'expert advice' were written by visiting bloggers or writers with very limited experience and knowledge of travelling in Scotland and there was a certain amount of misinformation out there.

This combination inspired me to start my own travel blog filled with original and helpful content gained through a lifetime of living, working and travelling in Scotland.  In 2014 'Adventures Around Scotland' was born and I haven't looked back since.  I feel proud to be an ambassador for my country and honoured to help so many people plan and enjoy a unique and memorable trip to my homeland.

Adventures Around Scotland is not just another guide listing the usual must see attractions; instead it is full of first-hand accounts, honest reviews, hidden treasures and useful travel tips from a local.

Although my Scotland travel blog was only conceived in 2014, I have been exploring Scotland my whole life, way back since I was a wee bairn growing up in the big city of Glasgow.  Back then family holidays consisted of regular trips to our caravan in Ayrshire and that is where my love of the outdoors and the coast began.

Since then I've either walked, cycled, driven, flew or sailed through and around most of Scotland - not to forget the countless train and bus journeys that I've undertaken along the way!  To date I've also lived in the city, the Highlands and two islands and this has allowed me to experience diverse parts of Scotland not just as a holidaymaker but as a local.

I'm currently lucky enough to call the beautiful and wild Orkney Islands my home.  When I'm not travelling I love spending time with Mr Adventures Around Scotland and our little lurcher, Willow.  Occasionally they join me on my explorations but most of the time I travel solo and this has given me great personal confidence - luckily Scotland is a very safe country for female solo travellers.

Although my Scotland travel blog started out as a hobby, it soon grew beyond anything I had envisaged.  After several stressful years of juggling my blog and day job, I decided to follow my passion and make the leap to self-employment as a freelance travel content creator and writer.  This means I now promote and travel around Scotland full-time which is pretty much a dream job so I couldn't be happier.

I am lucky enough to work on promotional campaigns for Scottish businesses, brands and destinations up and down the country.  I also use my extensive knowledge of Scotland, from the perspective of a local and a frequent traveller, to assist visitors with their own itineraries.
Finally and most importantly, I still spend much of my time providing Scotland advice and inspiration on my travel blog and social media channels which is where my online journey began and will continue as long as people enjoy what I do.

My personal passion is for exploring places that are not on the typical tourist trail and encouraging others to do the same.  I also prefer slow travel and spending longer periods of time in one destination so I can explore more in-depth and discover the hidden gems.
I have a wide range of interests from the outdoors to history and much more.  All these subjects are reflected in the content I create which is an eclectic mix of the various elements that make Scotland such a fascinating and diverse country.

I haven't been everywhere in Scotland, but it's on my list...

Even after a lifetime of travel, and despite Scotland being a fairly small country, there are still plenty of places that I've yet to visit.  I have a never-ending bucket-list that just seems to get longer no matter how many things I tick off and I'm always planning my next adventure.

I hope you enjoy following along with my travels and they inspire you to get off the beaten track and discover a different side of Scotland for yourself.

Susanne
