Things to do in Perthshire

Perthshire is a region in the heart of Scotland, stretching from the foot of the Cairngorms in the north to the borders of Fife and Stirlingshire in the south.  Affectionately known as Big Tree Country this region really comes to life in the autumn when the trees turn an array of burnt oranges and chestnut browns.  Of course, it’s worth a visit at any time of year and is popular in the summer with campers who take advantage of the many campsites dotted around.

If you are interested in discovering Scottish history you can visit one of the region’s many castles such as Blair Castle, Castle Menzies and the beautiful Atholl Palace.  You can see what life was like in the Iron Age at the reconstructed ancient Roundhouse on Loch Tay or visit the most romantic cathedral in Scotland, Dunkeld Cathedral.

If you have the energy you can tackle one of the five Munro’s, Ben Lawers is said to be one of the easiest.  For a more gentle walk try the Hermitage which is a gorgeous forest walk culminating at Black Linn Falls, a collection of magnificent crashing waterfalls.

Perthshire really is a region for lovers of the outdoors, there are so many walks, water sports and mountain activities to enjoy and of course, you are just south of the Cairngorms so have easy access to the ski slopes.  After a day outdoors you can reward yourself with a dram or two from one of the four Perthshire whisky distilleries.

If you are looking to base yourself in central Scotland so you can explore you won’t get a better location than Perthshire.
