Things to do in Argyll

Argyll is one of my favourite regions in Scotland and a place I had the pleasure of living in for several years.  I've explored much of this stunning part of the country although I've not had the time to write about most of it yet!

Steeped in history and an outdoor paradise, Argyll is home to some of Scotland's most popular tourist destinations such as Oban, Inverary and Kintyre.  However, there are plenty of hidden jewels if you know where to look.  Argyll’s Secret Coast is situated on the Cowal Peninsula and a true gem.  The beaches are wild and the area is dotted with castles, ruins and wildlife.  If you are lucky you could spot buzzards, golden eagles, red squirrels and perhaps even a basking shark.

The Kintyre Peninsula begins in the pretty village of Tarbert and includes Campbeltown, which was one the whisky capital of the world.  This part of Argyll also offers the chance to island hop to Gigha, Islay, Colonsay and Jura.  Alternatively head further north to the pretty town of Oban which is known as the gateway to Scotland's west coast islands.  From the large ferry terminal there are numerous possibilities to explore the Hebrides or some of Scotland's lesser known islands.

Argyll is rich in history with standing stones, castles and historic churchyards in abundance.  Kilmartin Glen is one of the most significant historical sites in the country having  the highest concentration of prehistoric carved stone surfaces, and Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in Scotland.  There are at least 350 ancient monuments in the area including Dunadd Fort, a royal power centre of the Gaelic Kings of Dál Riata.

Argyll is very much the 'classic' image of Scotland with outstandingly beautiful glens, mountains and lochs. However, much of the region still feels remote and isolated, with plenty secrets to discover away from the popular tourist route.   These are some of my suggestions of things to do in the area.

Puck's Glen, Argyll
Take a walk through the magical Puck's Glen near Dunoon
Hunt out mischievous spirits and bewitching scenery while you carefully explore this woodland gorge. With tumbling waterfalls, pools and hanging moss it's truly magical.
