Things to do in Dundee

Dundee is my second favourite city in Scotland and over the past few years I have visited often, watching it emerge from the shadows into a hip, thriving and exciting hub.  Thanks in part to a £1 Billion regeneration project transforming the waterfront area, including the creation of the stunning new V+A Museum of Design, the city is now being hailed as one of the top 10 hottest cities in the world by the Wall Street Journal.

Known as the home of jute, jam and journalism the city is famous for the production of jute in the 18th century, the invention of marmalade by local woman Janet Keillor and the comics “The Beano” and “The Dandy”.  It is also home of the famous Dundee cake.

The city was once often overlooked in favour of the bigger cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow but now there is a real buzz around the streets.  The locals are proud of their city and rightly so, it’s a fantastic place to spend a few days. The Verdant Works takes visitors back to when Jute was being produced on a massive scale, Discovery Point takes you aboard the world famous RSS Discovery, the Antarctic research ship, and the MacManus, which opened in 1867 houses an extensive collection exploring Dundee’s past.  Several new hotels have opened in the city and there is a thriving food and drink scene.

I love Dundee and I think it would be a shame to miss it off your Scotland itinerary.
